The Importance of Being Prepared
You have auto insurance, you have homeowners insurance or renters insurance, you hopefully have health insurance, so where is your emergency insurance? “But Sarah” you say… “All of those things are for emergencies!” Yes, they are for health emergencies, auto accidents, theft, etc. What will happen to you and your family if a disaster strikes. Just ask the people of New Orleans! I can still remember seeing thousands of people starving and screaming “we want food!” So it’s clear. We need to be prepared for emergency situations. We need to have food, a plan, medical equipment, etc. Even if it’s just a house disaster… do you know where your important documents are in case of a fire? Can you gather all you need, your family and be out of the house in a minimal amount of time? If not, start your emergency plan today!
We now know that we need to be prepared for emergency situations, so what are the important things to have on hand in case of an emergency?
The importance of food storage – We never think things like natural disasters that would affect our ability to buy food can happen to us in this day of grocery stores and modern convenience. What else can affect your ability to buy food and groceries? What if there was a sudden job loss? A disability in which you or your spouse couldn’t work? Wouldn’t it be comforting to know that no matter what can happen, you and your family will still be able to something as important as EAT??
The importance of medical supplies – This one should be a no brainer. Acting quickly is what first aid is all about. Minutes could be the difference between life and death for a loved one! You need to have enough supplies to handle all the medical emergencies that could arise in your house. Whether it’s a simple scrape on the knee or a serious chemical burn, you need the supplies to deal with the situation to keep your family as safe as possible.
The importance of light & warmth – I remember one day at my Grandma’s house. The power had gone out and I kept thinking of things to do, but could not do any of them because there was no power. You do not realise how much you use power until it’s gone. For example, we couldn’t even get our cars out of the garage because the garage door was electric! In case of a power outage that can last a long period of time you need to be able to function. In the cold months of winter when the power has gone out, do you have enough blankets to keep you warm? Just some more things to think about.
So do you believe me yet? Are you ready to get prepared? GOOD! Throughout the weeks I will give you many tips on getting prepared. Today starts another weekly special feature! The special feature for Emergency Preparedness Friday’s is What I’m Buying or Doing This Week to Prepare. So here it is!

So true Sarah. My brother in law was forced to leave their homes in Texas two years ago cause a hurricane threat. Well, the traffic to get out of town was soooo bad, they ran out of gas trying to leave, so turned around and decided to stay home. Well, since everyone else had left town there weren’t any grocery stores open. They were glad they had enough food for the week their city was literally deserted.
OK, so as my sister just pointed out to me, you can open your garage when the power goes out! There is a string!!! Don’t mind me, I’m not that smart.
