If you have 10 minutes you can get more organized today!

I often fall into the trap of thinking that I don’t have enough time to work on an organization project.  Therefore, the clutter and mess build and make projects more and more overwhelming.  As a working mom, managing time is vitally important and household tasks often fall to the bottom of the priority list.

If you have 10 minutes you can get more organized today!

Here are two things to keep in mind if you find yourself in a similar dilemma:

1.  A lot can be done in just a few minutes of time OR give bigger projects a few minutes per day.  You will see progress!

2.  Make those organization projects permanent so that you are not doing the same things repeatedly.  The key here is to eliminate “stuff” not just move it around!

These ideas hit home to me this past week when a few messes that have been  on my list for a long time were tackled and it really only took me a short time.

The junk drawer!  We all have at least one.  For must of us it is in the kitchen somewhere.  It just collects odds and ends.  Mine was driving me crazy.  I could barely shut the drawer.  I had ordered a drawer organizer, but that is as far as I had gotten in months.

I pulled everything out of the drawer and wiped it down.  Then I sorted my junk into 3 piles:  trash, put away elsewhere, and going back into the drawer.  Insert my new drawer organizer, needed items back in and bingo:

Project number 2 was my closet.  This is my 4th season, rounding out a full year, of trying a capsule wardrobe.  The idea behind a capsule wardrobe is to rotate your clothing every  season, keeping only about 30 clothing items out at a time.  I love this method!  My closet stays neat, clothing is easier to find, and I have gotten better at mixing and matching to create more outfits.  If you are just starting your capsule, this project will take you longer.  For me to rotate out my winter for spring took about 15-20 minutes.  It’s like a breath of fresh air to put sweaters and boots away!   And I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe, since I haven’t seen my spring pieces for 9 months.

My big stack of t-shirts.  While we are on the subject of clothing, lets talk about the pile of folded shirts.  For me it is t-shirts and since I teach PE I have a big stack of work and work-out shirts.  They were always a jumble.  Here is how you can solve the t-shirt mess:  Grab a shoe box, double fold them, turn them on their sides and stack inside the box.

The box can then go on a shelf in your closet or in a drawer.  You can easily see what shirt you need, keeping the stack neat.  No more pile cave-ins from grabbing a shirt on the bottom.  Try it! You’ll love it and your closet/drawer will be forever tidy.  10 minutes is all you’ll need.

Now on to toiletries.  I was traveling last week and wanted to grab a couple of those little hotel shampoo and conditioner bottles to take with me.  My travel bag had them in so many different pockets that I had a hard time finding what I needed.  When I got back, I decided I needed a better method.  I rounded them all up (there were a few in almost every bathroom drawer).  I threw away anything that wasn’t completely full and unopened.  Found another shoe box (shoe boxes are the best for organizing and are also free).  I made a row of lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and soap products.  I used empty toilet paper tubes as space fillers so that everything would stay standing.  Next time I travel, I can pull out of a central location exactly what I need instead of searching through bags and drawers.

Your toiletry project could be make-up, medicine, anything scattered around.  Grab a box and get it all in one place.  It is another 10 minute project.

I’m sure you are getting the idea.  Organizing a little section of your home does not take long.  Each project completed makes you a little more organized.  For big projects, commit to working on them just 10 minutes a day.  Before long those larger projects will get done too.  Remember to declutter and throw things away anytime you organize.  This will keep things neat and organized permanently.  Keep only the things you really use and love!  Happy organizing!

The capsule wardrobe concept is pretty cool. I'm thinking of organizing my closet in this ingenious manner as soon as I move in to my new apartment.
