Having guests come to stay in your home gives you a great reason to do that deep clean you’ve been putting off!

Where To Start

Since house guests will be staying a while, they will be using rooms in your home that are typically only seen by family members, like bedrooms, bathrooms, and maybe even the laundry room. Walk through these areas as if you are seeing them for the first time. Take note of things you may not notice, but a guest would. Maybe there’s a cobweb in the corner or a stack of books that belongs in another room. Take care of these things first. Then start your deep clean on each room. Clean things that you might not normally do. Dust and vacuum under furniture. Wipe down the baseboards. Clean the windows.

Running Out of Time?

If your guests are coming on short notice or you simply don’t have enough time to do a deep clean on your whole house, don’t worry! Do a selective deep clean. Thoroughly clean the areas where they will be spending most of their time: the room they will sleep in and the bathroom they will use. Make those two areas sparkle and do a regular clean on the other areas of your home.

Preparing Their Room

In addition to cleaning the room they will stay in, you’ll want to go the extra mile to make it home for them. If you don’t have a designated guest room, you might need to get a little creative! If your house guest is staying in a room normally occupied by a family member, make sure that family member takes everything they will need during the visit out of the room. You don’t want to disturb your house guest every morning by knocking on the door so you can get something you need out of that room.

If your guests are staying a while, clear out a few drawers for their clothes. Or, put a chair or bench in the room for their suitcase.

If it’s in the budget, new linens go a long way for making a guest feel welcome!

Give Them The Tour

When your houseguests arrive, give them the tour of your home. This isn’t just to show them where things are, you’ll also want to show them how things work. If there is a TV in the room, show them where the remote is and how to use it. If they will be using your washer and dryer, give them a quick tutorial.

Feeding Your House Guests

Before your guests arrive, prepare a meal or two ahead of time and freeze. That way, you’ll be able to spend more time with your guests and less time in the kitchen. Also, stock your kitchen with food guests can help themselves to. For breakfast keep a supply of fruit, yogurt, cereal, and bagels. Buy all the fixings for sandwiches. Stock the pantry with snacks. Encourage your guests to help themselves! That way, you won’t be stuck in the kitchen preparing food and your guests won’t feel like they are putting you out.

Go the Extra Mile

If you have the time and the means, add a nice extra or two for your house guests to let them know how welcome they are in your home. Put fresh flowers in their room. Supply them with a stack of magazines or books. Leave a local treat in their room, perhaps some local honey or local craft beer.

Now your home is ready for guests! Remember not to stress too much! Your home does not need to be perfect and you don’t need to serve gourmet meals. Your guest just want to enjoy spending time with you!
