The best toy for a 4 year old

Let’s take a quick look at some of my favorite toys.

When it comes to picking a toy, there really isn’t a single toy that can be called the best, especially when it comes to four year olds.  The good news is there is something on this list that any child will enjoy.

Dinosaur Jigsaw Puzzles

Dinosaurs are one of those things almost every child enjoys, especially around the age of 4. This is because they are beginning to understand the world around them and the thought of real live dinosaurs all those millions of years ago is fascinating to them!

This is a great set of a larger dinosaur scene, and individual puzzles in the form of some of the favorite little dinosaurs around.

Lincoln Longs 100th Anniversary Tin

Lincoln Logs are a classic toy, and age 4 is the perfect age to get started with them! This special Lincoln Log package comes in a collectible tin.

The package includes 111 pieces made of real, high-quality maple wood.

If you aren’t familiar with how they work, they have indentations that rest on each other to build structures and connect them.

This is a Creative Construction Engineering that will be enjoyed by many children and help with both their motor skill and logical skill development.

It even comes with instructions, or you can build whatever you would like. Your 4 year old will play with this toy for hours and hours, and adults enjoy it to since they may have had it during their childhood.

Colorful United States and World Puzzles

These solid wooden puzzles are great for young children, and make the perfect rainy day activity.  This creative puzzle is not only fun, but also an educational puzzle.  The bright pieces are shaped in the size of their respective state or country, and have wooden knobs for easy play.

This set of two colorful puzzles teaches geography of the united states, and of the whole world!  It is also great for color recognition.

Melissa & Doug Vet Set

This Melissa & Doug vet set is one of our favorite toys.  It is a 24 piece set complete with a puppy and a kitty to care for.

It has everything your children need to care for the included pets, as well as any other stuffed animals or dolls at home!  This is a great toy for girls or boys, and can provide hours of open ended fun.

Adventure Kidz Outdoor Exploration Kit

If you want your child to begin to foster a love of the outdoors, or just get outside and play, then this toy is for curious boys and girls.

This set is all about STEM learning and beginning to understand how the scientific method works, specifically when it comes to exploration! Your child will learn to love nature.

It can also help them stretch their imagination indoors on days it is not nice enough to play outside.

This exploration set contains: Toy Binoculars, Flashlight, Compass, Whistle, Magnifying Glass, Backpack. Great Kids Gift Set for Camping, Hiking, Educational and Pretend Play.

It is lots of fun and encourages the kids to get outside and explore!  This kit also comes in a wide variety of colors.

Whack A Frog Game

Now for something completely different! This Whack-A-Frog can help develop motor skills and hand eye coordination.

Did I mention it is just plain fun to whack these Frogs?

This game also teaches your child to pay attention to wait for the flashing lights to try and whack the frog.

It has the ability to support multiple players to teach your child to take turns.

It has 38 levels to play on, which increase in difficulty, and comes with two hammers making it great for an adult to play with too.

Hover Soccer Ball

This is another entry in the unique category. The Let Loose Moose Hover soccer ball has lights to add a new dimension to the traditional game of soccer.

It can be used on smooth surfaces, indoor and out, and is a great way for your four year old to get some exercise and develop coordination.

The hovering portion of this toy introduces a unique aspect that will encourage your child to not kick it up in the air and break the furniture making it much better for indoor play than a regular ball.

This is great for days when everyone is cooped up inside together, or days when the weather is nicer to play outside Because it comes in a set of two, you can make one an outside hover ball and the other an indoor hover ball!

The Lady Bug Game

Are you looking for a unique game for kids?  The lady bug game is just that.  It is a fun game that provides a unique game play experience – it is always different.  As far as board games go, this is a hidden gem.

Best of all, this is a great activity for the whole family.  Be sure to get the lady bug safely home!

What fine motor skills should a 4 year old have?

Four years old really is a special time, as motor skills really start to grow and solidify. It is around this age that you start to see a four year old really build some hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.

One of the biggest fine motor skills at this age is that they begin to show a preference for using a certain hand.

Need help encouraging this and figuring it out?

If you are looking for something to play with a four year old, and build motor skills, the Whack a Frog because it is a lot of fun, and will teach skills like patience and paying close attention.
