Amazing Toys for a 5 Year Old

Picking toys can be challenging! There are so many different things to think about, whether you are looking for a toy for your own child, or looking to purchase a gift for another.

When we recommend toys, we look a a number of factors. First and foremost is the experience the child is going to have with the toy. Is the toy going to entertain them? Broaden their horizons? Teach them something? Expand their imagination?

When it comes to gifts for 5 year olds, all of these things play a big role. At the age of 5, kids really are starting to look at the world around them in a new way.

The Best Toy for a 5 Year Old

My only qualification in picking these toys is that I’ve had a five year old, and these have all entertained us endlessly!  I always try to look for something a little bit different, to provide a new way to interact with something and keep the adults entertained too.

Let’s look at some of my favorites!

Stomp Rocket Stunt Planes

This is a great outdoor toy that will keep your five year old running and jumping for hours.

This plane is kid operated, by running, jumping, and stomping on the launch pad.

There are three types of planes, all of which do something different after launch. The planes are made out of foam, so they aren’t hard and cannot damage anything.

This set couldn’t be easier to put together, and also teaches your child some of the principles of physics and flight by example.  It is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family.

Hapinest Dinosaur Stamp and Sticker Set

This dinosaur stamp and sticker set is great for hours of imaginary play and arts and crafts.  It is lots of fun for your dino enthusiast, and stamp sets are one of the most classic gifts around.

We are talking about 20 stamps, stickers that can be colored with included colored pencils, and a stamp pad.

The stickers can anthem be used in the induced sticker activity scene, so your child can make something different each time they play.

Not sold on dinosaurs? There are several other sets available such as space, woodland animals, and unicorns.

By creating their own dinosaur or other story with stickers and stamps, your child will get to exercise their creativity and imagination.  Bringing out any of these sets is a great rainy day activity.

Melissa & Doug Diner Play Set

I can’t tell you how many hours of fun we have had with this Melissa & Doug diner set.  From following directions in the form of taking orders, to basic math skills when it comes to paying, this set has it all.

There are so many endless food combinations too!

Best of all?  When you’re done playing it all goes right back in the box for easy cleanup and storage.

ThinkFun Zingo Sight Words Game

One of the skills every 5 year old is always working on is reading. ThinkFun Zingo works on these skills with a fun gameplay based on sight words.  It goes way beyond a simple board game, and you can play round after round after round.

Just like bingo, this game is so much fun that children won’t even realize they are working on their reading skills.

This game will help you child begin to recognize common sight words, and deal with some of the hardest aspects of reading, like silent vowels and consonants.

As they begin to learn the sight words with this fun game, their minds will automatically begin to build these connections, making reading easier even as they begin to work with bigger words.

This fun game is full of color and fun characters to encourage them along the way, and is so much fun the whole family will want to play!  Plus, my five year old loves the little contraption that displays the chips!

Light-up Terrarium Kit

Have you got a little budding scientist? Does your child be to go outdoors even in the worst weather? This miniature garden is the key to enjoying the outdoors inside! This is ideal if you are stuck in your home!

This terrarium has a built in LED light that transforms the garden by night, and will become illuminated, acting as a great night light.

This terrarium comes empty, with everything you need to build this magical garden, meaning your child can completely customize it into something they love.

It even comes with stickers to set the scene, and a fun bunny that will undoubtably enjoy the garden.

It comes with a spray bottle for watering, and a stick to help plant the wheatgrass and chia seeds.

It has everything you need for a beautiful indoor gardening experience. It will also encourage responsibility by making your child responsible for watering their indoor garden.

whoobli Punching Bag for Kids

Does your child need to get some excess energy out?

This freestanding punching bag designed especially for kids is exactly what they need to get going!

It is free standing and made of leather. It will bounce back every time, encouraging your child to really move! It even comes with kid sized punching gloves, and can be height adjusted.

This can provide hours and hours of fun for your child, even if they aren’t usually one for physical activity.

This boxing set looks like something a pro would use, but has been designed for the littlest boxers!

Encourage your child to get active and try something new with this set.

Picking the Best Toy for a Five Year Old

I think this age is pretty great, and it is amazing to see how rapidly kids are learning growing and changing.

These toys focus on physical and cognitive development, which are two of the most important milestones for a 5 year old.  These toys are all something a little different than you would normally think of, to help expand their horizons.

There really is no single best toy here, since any child would be happy to receive one of these wonderful gifts on this list.

Let’s take a look at these awesome toys one more time:

It’s hard to pick a favorite on this list, but if I had to narrow it down, here’s what I would go with.

If you’re looking for toys that are more physical to help them get out all of their endless energy, consider the Stomp Rocket or Punching Bag.

If you’re looking for something that is fun for everyone, try the Zingo Sight Words Game or Melissa and Doug Diner Playset.  These are both great educational activities.

This is one of the reasons picking toys is so much fun, you really can’t get it wrong!
