Now don’t panic, but it’s possible that your computer keyboard may have a life of it’s own. You never know what kind of creatures may be lurking under the keys! Dust, dirt, and germs tend to gravitiate toward your computer keyboard, but have no fear! Here’s are a few quick tips to keep your keyboard looking spiffy clean.
First, turn off your computer and unplug the keyboard. Then you can use either canned air or a vacum cleaner. With the canned air you can spray away any dust or dirt, or use your vacuum to suck it up. Use a small brush attachment to get in between the keys.
Next take a lint free cloth, and lightly wipe down your keyboard removing any remaining lint or dirt on the keys. A microfiber cloth works well.
After that you will need rubbing alcohol armed with a few Q-tips.
Make sure to use 90% isopropyl alcohol, and not ethyl-based rubbing alcohol which can remove the numbers and letters from your keys. Dip your Q-tips in the alcohol and gently rub on top of and in-between keys. Rubbing alcohol will kill germs and evaporates quickly.
If you don’t have rubbing alcohol on hand, a Magic Eraser is also a great tool for removing dirt. Use warm water, and be sure to wring out all the excess water so you don’t get any moisture between your keys.
That’s it! Just plug your keyboard back in, turn the computer on, and off you go!
Side note: Ironically as I was writing this post I was eating toast for breakfast, and spilled a large glass of juice on my keyboard.
Perhaps if I didn’t eat and drink near my computer, I wouldn’t have a need for writing this post in the first place. 🙂
