Dry Food Storage Containers

Boxes of flour, half used bags of pasta, beans, and other dry goods scattered throughout the kitchen.  Trying to measure out mixes and flours out of flimsy bags only to have the flour end up all over.

If you have ever accidentally dropped a half used bag of something dry, or simply had the bag break on you, you know what I am talking about. The best dry food storage containers are something you don’t even realize you need – until you’ve already made a mess!

When it comes to picking the best dry food storage containers, there are a couple of things to think about.

First of all, consider the size of storage containers you would like.  Many of these options also come in different sizes, and can be purchased individually besides in the sets shown here.

Next, think about where the containers will be stored.  If they are on a shelf in plain view of your kitchen, you may want to pick something that will fit well with your kitchen aesthetic.

Finally, since these containers are reusable, the tops are very important.  You want a good strong top that won’t loosen over time or break.  You won’t find any flimsy tops in any of these storage container sets!

Here are our favorites:

Now let’s take a closer look at each of these, and why we like them so much!

OXO Good Grips – 5 Pieces

OXO Good Grips 5-Piece POP Container Set

I’m not going to lie, these OXO Good Grips dry food storage containers may be my favorite out there.  The seal on this top is like nothing else I have ever seen before, which make them especially good storage containers for flour.

If you have stainless appliances and plan on storing your containers out in the open or on top of your refrigerator, the steel top can be a nice option.

All of the OXO Good Grips containers come in a number of sizes so you can store anything you need to.

Home Basics

Home Basics 4-Piece Glass Canister Cylinder Set with Clear Window (Red)

This is the only container set in our list that does not have add on options, but is still worth mentioning.

These dry food storage containers are the most stylish out there, and come in a teal, red, yellow, black, navy or silver. They are perfect to blend in in the silver finish or provide a modern look, or give your kitchen a pop of color.

Their unique color and appearance makes them a great candidate if you are storing them in plain sight.

The tops twist on and off, and the only downside to these is that they are not dishwasher safe.

OXO Dry Food Storage

When it comes to dry food storage, OXO has a bit of a cult following.  I received a set as a gift, and I was hooked!

They look great, and are easy to use.  They also have quite an air tight seal.

The only downside is cleaning them.  I’ve messed up the top cleaning it many times, and it takes forever to dry.

It does take some getting used to for cleaning the top of the OXO pop containers.  The most important thing to note is that the top needs to be hand washed, and disassembled.

As for the clear contianer itself?  You can put those in the dishwasher no problem,

Rubbermaid Brilliance vs OXO

Another popular storage container out there are the Rubbermaid Brilliance containers, and I must admit, I really like these too.

When it comes to OXO vs Rubbermaid Brilliance, Rubbermaid wins for one reason, ease of cleaning.

Instead of the POP mechanism, the Rubbermaid Brilliance contains feature and easy to use and easy to clean snap tight lid.

Chef’s Path vs OXO

Chef’s Path also make popular food storage containers, but how does it compare when it comes down to Chef’s Path vs OXO?

The fact of the matter is these two containers are very similar.  They both feature a different type of mechanism to seal.

The OXO POP vs the Chef’s Path Clamp.  They both have the same functionality though, and the Chef’s Path lids are to be wiped down only.

While the OXO POP list are a pain to clean, they can still be hand washed.

The other benefit OXO has vs Chef’s Path is that Chef’s Path containers are generally sold in sets, while OXO has the ability to purchase individual containers or a few containers at a time.

There also is a greater variety of sizes and shapes when it comes to OXO containers vs Chef’s Path containers.

Picking the Best Dry Food Storage Containers

There are so many options out there for dry food storage containers, but these are the five best sets out there:

The choices really come down to aesthetic, personal preference, and the amount of add on containers available.

There’s really no wrong when it comes to picking one of these storage containers.

The OXO are very popular, and come with a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes.

A similar container is the Chef’s Path, but it does not come in as wide of a variety as OXO Pop.

Both of these have a super air tight seal, but it can be annoying to clean their lids.

A similar container is the DWËLLZA KITCHEN set and options, and is very cost effective.

If you’re looking for high quality, variety of sizes and shapes, and ease of cleaning, then the containers are a great choice.

Finally, if you are just looking for something that looks nice, consider the Home Basics set.

Uses for Dry Food Storage Containers

Here are some of my favorite uses for dry food storage containers.

  • Dry Pasta.  Many times I don’t make a whole package, and a storage contianer keeps it fresh.
  • Rice.  My favorite rice comes in a bag, which can sometimes be a pain to pour.  Storing it in a contianer allows me to scoop out whatever amount I need.
  • Strong Spices.  I often store strong spices in small bags, then put all of the bags into a large storage container.
  • Specialized Flours.  I use many different types of gluten free flours, which come in boxes and bags.  Putting them in a storage container just makes them so much easier to work with.
  • Cereal.  I am terrible at opening boxes and bags of cereal without destroying the packaging, so I just dump the box into a storage container after I open it.

These are just a couple of different ways I use the best dry food storage containers.  Be sure to let us know your favorite things to do with these containers in the comments!
