Gifts of Time for Father’s Day

Our fathers do so much for us all throughout the year. That’s why when Father’s Day comes around it is important to give our dads something special. A great gift doesn’t always have to be something expensive or even physical. One of the best gifts a child can give their parents is the gift of their time.

Taking an interest in something that your dad is passionate about it is a great way to show him you care. Think about his hobbies. What is he into? What kinds of things does he like to do? If you aren’t really sure then ask someone that does…aka mom.

Once you have a topic run with it! Look for an event or group in the same vein that you can plan for the two of you to do together. Some ideas might include: a genealogy night at your local town hall, going to a professional basketball game together, or to a themed museum. There are so many possibilities that you can do to really show him that you care about what interests him.

Help Him Learn Something New

The gift of an education is the best gift a person can receive. This even includes dads! After all, it never hurts to learn something new.

There are many different kinds of classes that you can look for and sign him up!  Don’t be afraid to get his input or casually ask him if there is a new skill he might want to learn. Does he like to bake? Does he want to learn more about how to use that fancy phone he got for Christmas?

If he is not apt to go to classes on his own, then volunteer to go with him or enlist the help of a close friend of his to be his partner.

Do Important Things

There are many ways that you can spend time with your father on Father’s Day. One idea is ask him if he might want to volunteer at a place that is important to him. Spending time at a soup kitchen, pet shelter or church event?

Keep in mind that you might want to talk about this with him beforehand. This will be important so that he can be comfortable and also work with a charity that is near and dear to him. If being around a lot of people isn’t his thing, work towards another goal that helps you both to feel well. This might include hiking or taking a walk – all of which will improve both of your health.

The Literal Gift of Time

The most memorable gifts are those from the heart. It’s easy to tell when a loved one has put a lot of time and effort into picking out the perfect gift. One thing that almost always makes a perfect present, no matter the occasion, is a clock or watch.

Use Father’s Day as a way to show your dad how much you care by picking out a beautiful watch. Surprisingly, there are many different kinds of watches that won’t break the bank but really show your father how much you care. For example, Treehut Wooden watches are not only great at telling time but have a unique style. Many of them start out at around $230.00.

Personalization Mall is a great website for designing a custom clock for dad. Custom glass etched wording of a special saying or quote will make it very personal to your dad.

Help Get Stuff Done

Consider offering to take care of some of the bigger items on your dad’s to do list. Is there something that you can do to take the burden off of him a bit? Maybe he needs his lawn mowed? Or maybe he needs his prescriptions picked up? Whether a simple errand or a big home project, tell him to make a list of things that you can easily get done.

While it’s important to help out all throughout the year, helping to get done a long awaited task or project will mean a lot. After all, there is no better feeling than crossing something off of your list of things to do.

If you aren’t able to offer him the help, then help him find someone that can. Does he need his entire house cleaned? Then find him an awesome house cleaner! Get creative and keep in mind that there is a good chance that he will tell you not to go through the trouble. Yet, fathers are usually among the first to help us with things of this nature. Therefore, it is important that he has someone offering him the same, even if it’s just once a year.

Timeless Memories

One amazing thing that you can do for your dad on this special day is something that will help him remember. Think about hiring a good photographer to take some pictures of the entire family. This doesn’t have to be a big thing or even formal. Have the photographer follow your dad around a bit doing everyday things. Get plenty of pictures of him with other members of the family.

If a professional isn’t in your budget, then do it yourself. Sometimes it can even be fun to take photos secretly without him knowing. The product is a set of perfectly imperfect candid pictures of the man that means so much to everyone doing important things for his family. Use the pictures to create a black and white scrapbook. To do this, you will likely have to take the pictures in the months and days leading up to Father’s Day.

Many websites make putting together a memorable book of pictures super easy!  Shutterfly, Walmart and Snapfish are great options for this gift. There are even apps that will take the pictures from your phone and turn them into a memory book automatically.
