Raking a carpet just sounds weird, right? But this is an actual thing. Carpet rakes are just what they sound like, rakes to use on your carpet. Raking your carpet pulls up dirt, debris, crumbs, and pet hair that are lodged deep in the fibers. Once these are raked up, they are easily swept up in the vacuum.

Vacuum Slowly

It sounds simple, but it works. Vacuuming your carpet more slowly gives your machine more time to work properly and suck up all the dirt. Think of what might remain in your carpet if you move the machine too quickly.

Go Both Ways

House cleaning professionals know that the best way to clean a carpet is to vacuum in two directions. Not only are you spending more time cleaning the carpet, but vacuuming at a different angle will allow you to pick up even more dirt and dust.

Clean Your Vacuum

Now is a good time to mention that if your vacuum is dirty, it won’t be picking up as much as it could. Vacuuming slowly and in two directions won’t make much of a difference if your machine has compromised suction because it needs to be cleaned. Take the time to remove as many parts of your vacuum and give it a thorough cleaning. If you aren’t sure how to clean it, type in the brand and model on YouTube and you’ll probably find a bunch of tutorials for cleaning your specific type.

Use Attachments on the Carpet

Your vacuum came with attachments for a reason! Be sure to use these attachments for stairs, corners and other spots that are hard to access.

Vacuum Often

Vacuuming frequently will help keep dirt and dust from building up in your carpets. Pet owners especially should make frequent vacuuming a priority.

Spot Clean the Carpet

If you don’t have access to a steam cleaner, you might need to spot clean when your carpets get a stain. Try to clean the stain as soon as possible and test the cleaner in a small, unnoticeable spot to make sure it won’t bleach or damage your rug.

Just because you don’t own a steam cleaner doesn’t mean that you can’t get your carpets super clean! Follow the tips above for cleaner, fresher carpets. And remember, if you do need to steam clean from time to time, you can simply rent a carpet cleaner for the day.
