Pick Your System

What kind of color coding system are you looking to achieve? Are you looking to organize according to accessibility or another more specific system? Before you head on down to your local office superstore, make a list of all the items you will need for this project. For file folders you may want to buy different colored folders for each area within the cabinet. For example, use green folders for anything related to finances. Colored tabs also work just as well for this, too! Most practical items, such as pens, pencils and other office supplies can also go in color coded areas. Colorful office trays can be placed on the desk so that they are eye catching and make people more aware of where to put these items after use.

Practicality is Important

With any organization system, you have to remember that less is always more. You should only be focusing on color coding items that are commonly misplaced or hard to find in a hurry. Items such as files, writing utensils, important contact information, bills or reading materials should be what you hone in on. Other items probably won’t require an entire color coding system.

Maintain It Once In Use

If you are going to go through the trouble of color coding your home office, make sure that you keep it up once you have it set up! Any kind of organizational system that is set up is done so with the purpose of making things easier. Many people fail to maintain the new system that they have created, and have to revert back to chaos within their work environment. Be mindful of the supplies you will need to keep your new system in order. Also, show anyone that may be using the home office the system you have created. By showing them how to do this, everyone can work together to keep it going.

As long as items are classified in some kind of system, there is no reason you can’t have fun with this. Another idea is to color code items by the person that uses them! For example, give each family member or worker a color and anything with their color on it is their responsibility or item to use. Figure out a systems that is both fun and practical to get your home office in shipshape!
