Makin’ Habits

RunningI’m sure you’ve heard the phrase that it takes 30 days to make or break a habit.  It is so true though.  If you do something every day for 30 days it will continue to be a part of your life.  So besides plugging away at something for 30 days, how else can you make new habits become part of your every day life?

One at a Time!  You should only try to create one new habit at a time.  Otherwise, if you try to do to many at once, you could get overwhelmed, and they will all fail!

Piggyback – Another good way to make sure your new habit will become part of your life is to attach it to something else in your life that is already a habit.  Say you put your child down for a nap at the same time every day, and the new habit you want to start is to read a book for 30 minutes a day.  Well, then right after you put your child down is a perfect time to do your reading.  When it occurs with another habit you already have, you success rate will skyrocket.  Another good one is making your bed.  If you decide to make your bed every day after you get out of the shower, it is more likely to get done!

The Buddy System – Find someone else that wants to create the habit with you.  This one works really well for creating exercising habits!  If you have a friend that you will exercise with every day, you will more likely get it done, because you are accountable to someone else.  This can work for other habits though.  You can have phone “check-ins” with each other, or even read together.

Tell Someone – I know that when I tell Trevor about a habit I am trying to start I will definitely follow through with it.  Otherwise he will say “hey, I thought you were going to start doing this”.  It’s like having my own little reminder system.

Create a Daily Checklist – Type something out an print it.  Then either laminate it, or place it in plastic sleeve.  Have each day of the week and the item you want to do each day.  Don’t forget the box for your checkmark!  I know I get a great satisfaction of checking something off every day.  Or you could take every day for 30 days and write that item on your to do list for the day in your Daily Home Planner.
