Having lived through the 8 month stage twice, I have put together a list of great, unique toys any eight month old will be happy to play with.

How to select toys for 8 month old babies.

Eight month olds are about two main things, learning about their surroundings (including how to move around better, like crawling and grabbing things), and getting new teeth.

Each and every toy on this list is suited for one of those purposes, if not both!  As a bonus, I’m also taking a look at toys that will entertain the adult playing with the baby too.

These toys will also all keep baby entertained well beyond the 8 month range.

Let’s take a closer look at these great baby toys.

Manhattan Toy Artful Skwish Rattle and Teether

Let’s talk about those two things an 8 month old does over and over: flail their arms and get new teeth.

Teething is no joke. It is important to provide toys that are safe for babies to chew on, because let’s face it, they will chew on anything they can get their hands on.

This natural wood rattle and teether is a great option, since for some strange reason babies love to chew on wood.

The hardness of the wood feels good on their poor gums for some reason. Both my children loved wood teething toys.

Babies also like to flail their arms around at eight months old as they learn what to do with them, and this toy helps with just that too, it is great for motor skill development.

Hape Penguin Musical Wobbler

If you haven’t heard of Hape before, they are a German brand known for their high quality wooden toys (just wait until you get into wooden trains), and is made of non-toxic material.
There is a bell inside this toy that makes music as this penguin wobbles.

An eight month old will be entertained by two things, the sound of the bell, and the fact that they can’t quite knock this adorable penguin over.

Babies think this thing is hilarious, and is a huge hit with babies and older kids alike!

Mini Tudou Baby Blocks

These blocks are great for teething and grabbing, and one other important thing, throwing.

If your baby hasn’t quite yet figured out how to throw things, trust me, that day is coming soon.

These blocks are nice and soft, so they won’t hurt when they are thrown at you or even their siblings.

Besides being chewable and throwable without injury, they are also able to teach basic math skills.  They are also easy to stack (and knock over) for curious babies.  Watching babies learn to stack toys and develop spatial reasoning skills is always a treat.

Its never too early to start, and you will be entertained making basic addition and subtraction equations with these blocks too!

High Tech Stack & Learn

This is a variation on a classic, you know the toy where the babies stack the rings.  It has bright colors, and is great for helping babies develop their motor skills and cognitive skills.  It also helps build hand-eye coordination as they lean to stack the rings.

This toy is a classic for a reason, babies love them and this is a toy they will continue to use at all ages, yes, even as a ring toss as they get older!

This high tech version really takes things to the next level. It has modes for teaching colors, animals, and music interactively.

Your baby can conduct their own little orchestra making music combinations!

Again the two of you will be entertained for hours, and it is great for beginning to teach color recognition too!

Rainbow Stacking & Nesting Cups

While we’re talking about stacking, and working on skills like spatial reasoning, color recognition, and motor skills, these stacking cups are a must.

First and foremost, they are the most inexpensive toy on this list.  They also will once again provide hours of fun for your child at all stages.

Best of all, they can even be use as a bath toy!

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Puppy’s Remote

Finally is Puppy’s remote. Puppy is a character invented by Fisher-Price as part of their laugh and learn series.  It is jam packed with bright colors and sounds.

Did I mention those babies love to grab your stuff? The remote is a fan favorite among babies of all ages, and it is the last thing you want them putting in their mouths since everyone touches it!

Get the baby their very own remote so they can be like the adults without the germs.  They will love to press the colorful buttons.

Like all the laugh and learn toys, this toy is jam packed with multiple modes and exposes your baby to just about everything like colors, ABCs, sing a longs, and just adorable phrases that keep adults entertained too.

This toy is packed with playful songs and fund sounds.

Awesome Baby toys for 8 month olds

Let’s take a look at each of these toys one more time:

Quite honestly, each and every toy on this list is awesome for a 8 month old, it really comes down to personal preference.

If baby is trying to grab everything the adults are using, consider the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Puppy’s Remote

If teething is in full swing, the Manhattan Toy Artful Skwish Rattle and Teether is a great choice.

If baby has learned to throw things, or you are dreading that day, check out the Mini Tudou Baby Blocks, which teaches math and is great to chew on as added bonuses.

There really isn’t a wrong choice on this list!

All about 8 month olds

8 month range is a really interesting time, because your baby is becoming less baby like every day!

If your baby isn’t crawling yet, don’t sweat it, because they will be soon. Babies like to do things at their own pace. Soon after crawling comes pulling themselves up on objects and standing on their own two little feet!

Once they can get around, they can get into everything, which means they are really starting to enjoy playing.

Enjoy playtime with the best toy for an 8 month old, because before you know it they will be on to the next thing!
