Hiku – The Device for Your Grocery List

DSC_0067

I was recently pitched a product, and I assure you, that although I get hundreds of pitches, I check out every single one.  If I am intrigued, I will respond.  When I was pitched this device, I was definitely intrigued, and now that I have it, I can’t imagine how I lived my life without it.

It sounds simple enough.  It is basically a barcode scanner called Hiku.  The kicker here is that the barcode scanner will automatically add what you scan to your grocery list that is on your phone.  Not only that, but for things that do not have a barcode, like fruits and vegetables, you can talk into the Hiku and it will add those items as well.  The transcription is pretty great, but it will also add your voice recording as a note on the item, just in case you don’t quite understand what it heard you say.

Here is why this is so much better than using an app with a barcode scanner built into it from your phone.

First, 9 times out of 10 my phone isn’t right near me when I’m getting something to eat and taking the last granola bar out of the box.  The Hiku has a powerful magnet on it, so you can stick it right on your fridge and always have it close by.

Second, when I’m planning my meals for the week, I am often doing it from my phone.  I don’t want to have to switch apps to add things to my grocery list.  So, I can have my phone with the recipe in one hand (or a cookbook) and the Hiku in the other.  I look around my pantry and can immediately talk into the Hiku for my missing items… Onion Powder, Basil, Vanilla… done and done.  This is why I add all of the ingredients to my shopping list when meal planning.  That way when I’m standing in the pantry and going through the shopping list in Pepperplate, as soon as I add the ingredient to Hiku, or verify that I have enough of the ingredient in the pantry or fridge then I check it off the shopping list in Pepperplate.  It has practically eliminated the “Dang it!  I forgot I used the last of the basil last week!” runs to the grocery store at the last minute.

Third, it uploads instantaneously to my shopping list.  If I’m out running errands, and my husband takes the last piece of bread, he just needs to scan the barcode and it’s added to my list right away!  There are even certain areas of the country where it will actually deliver the groceries to you.

This device is just so simple, that it’s brilliant.  I have really loved using it!  It has made meal planning and shopping so much easier.
