Today we are talking about the art of list making. What? You say you already know how to make a list? You do it all the time on the backs of envelopes, school papers, receipts and any little scrap of paper you can find? Ahhhh…well stick around. We need to talk.
One of the most important things in list making is being able to locate your list once you’ve made it! Beyond that, here are some tips help you with your lists:
- It’s a good idea to have a long term list and a short term list. By classifying tasks long or short term, you don’t feel so overwhelmed by the things you still need to do.
- Always keep your list in a handy/central location. If it’s your daily To Do list, keep it in a notebook, day planner or even on your phone. If it’s a grocery list, keep it near the fridge. If it’s a list of things you’d like your teenager to do, you may want to tape it to their forehead. Whatever works!
- When dealing with your Daily To Do list, prioritize the items on your list. Do the most pressing or important task first! You can also take the advice of Brian Tracy in his book Eat that Frog! Eating the frog means that you take your least favorite item on the list (your frog) and do it first! Eating your frog first thing in the morning can pretty much assure that anything else you have to do that day won’t be nearly as awful! You won’t procrastinate the rest of your To Do list simply because you are dreading that one unpleasant task.
- If you have a huge project on your list, don’t be afraid to break it down into smaller, more manageable steps.
- Each day pick the 5 most important things that need to be done. You can select 5 items in more than one category if you’d like. Top 5 Family, Top 5 Work, etc. This keeps your list(s) short and “do-able”. Prioritize!
Moms are busy people with lots of things to remember. Making a well organized list will keep you from forgetting things, help you tackle the most important tasks first and keep you from feeling overwhelmed.
